Why do Some Towels Absorb More Water than Others?

Thick towels absorb more water as it has more fibre. Cotton towels are good water absorbers. This fabric is pure cellulose with negatively charged ions attracting the water molecules. It is observed that a cotton towel can absorb 25 times more water than its original weight. Cotton is said to be hydrophilic.

Why do towels absorb water? Whenever we dip a towel into a tub of water, the water molecules rush towards the cellulose fibres in the towels and bind up, resulting in water absorption. This is also the reason why cotton clothes shrink and wrinkle after laundry. Generally, all-natural fibres like cotton absorb more water in comparison to synthetic ones. Therefore, towel manufacturers in India prefer cotton over other fabrics.

Factors that make a towel water-absorbent

  • Size: Greater the surface area ore is the ability of a towel to absorb water. For example, you drop water on the dining table, a handkerchief or a kitchen towel, which will absorb more water? It is the kitchen towel. Some hyper absorbent towels hold five times more water than their size.
  • Construction fabric: There are a variety of fabrics used in the towel manufacturing units, like cotton, bamboo, hemp, wool, silk, and others. Among all these fabrics, cotton is the most absorbent fabric and is the home textile of India. Japanese cotton has a great structure, capillary action, and hydrophilic properties in comparison to other cotton varieties, and so is high on demand. Other premium cotton brands are Egyptian cotton or Pima cotton that are super absorbent.
  • Thickness and Density: These two factors influence the water absorption capacity of a towel. The space taken up by the fabric determines the thickness, and how tightly the fabrics are packed determines its density. Towels with high density and thickness have more water absorption capacity than others.

After 2-3 years, towels start losing their softness and water absorbency. As they are washed and dried several times, which has made them lose fibres, and towel thickness. Also, several fabric softeners reduce the water absorbency of towels. It is better to avoid such fabric softeners and wash these towels separately to maintain their durability.
